Universiti Malaysia Sarawak or UNIMAS was established in 1992 after the announcement of Vision 2020 in order to meet the increasing needs for higher education and well-trained human resources. Its location in the state of Sarawak will hasten the pace of regional development and national integration.
The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s mission is to establish itself as an exemplary university of internati6nally acknowledged stature and as a scholarly institution of preference and choice for both students and academic staff through the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship. It will do so by offering a range of opportunities in education, training and scholarly services, and through the strategic and innovative application of knowledge to enhance the quality of the nation’s culture and the prosperity of its people, UNIMAS presently offers undergraduate programmes in various areas including Resource Science and Technology, Medicine & Health Sciences, Engineering, Information Technology & Computer Science, Economics and Business, Social Sciences, Applied and Creative Art, Cognitive Sciences & Human Development.

Courses offered by the University are conducted through its eight faculties, five institutes of research and five centres. There are currently about 5,400 students at the university. For the 2005/2006 academic session, 39 undergraduate programmes are offered. UNIMAS adopts the semester system. Each semester lasts 17 weeks, that is 14 weeks of lectures, 1 week of revision and 2 weeks of examination. A third semester is offered as an option for the students.
